Enhanced recovery is a modern evidence-based approach that helps people recover more quickly after having major surgery. Research has shown that the earlier a person gets out of bed and starts walking, eating and drinking after having an operation, the shorter their recovery time will be.
The surgery itself is no different but the way in which your pain is managed pre-operatively and post-operatively has been improved.
This has resulted in patients mobilising more quickly with less pain, and they are often home after just a few days.
Surgical drains are avoided, as is the use of urinary catheters, but each patient is an individual who needs will be carefully assessed.
